National SCRABBLE® Association Club 171 Our regular meeting is 5:30-10pm every Tuesday at the Chevy Chase Community Center. Please bring equipment if possible and contribute $1 toward photocopying, etc. Paired rounds begin at 5:30, about 6:15, 7:10, 8:05, and at 9pm sharp. Here are some thoughts from Harold Rennett, director of our club: Another great figure in the history of Scrabble in DC died on Monday, December 13. Robert Paul Kilpatrick was a person who, like his close friends Evelyn Howard and Bill Holland, spent a huge percentage of his leisure hours around a Scrabble board. For more than two decades, he was a fixture at Scrabble tournaments in and around DC and at the North American Championship wherever it was held, including the first North American Open tournament in Boston in 1985. Bob was a tremendously warm and friendly person who had a broad, engaging smile and a great sense of humor that helped everyone around him feel at ease. Bob was also a man with an inspiring past. He was born and raised in rural Georgia at time when the lives of African-Americans in environments such as his were, to say the least, limited in opportunity. Nevertheless, Bob’s intellect got him into and through Morehouse College, arguably the preeminent African-American undergraduate institution in the United States. I was fortunate to have met Bob when we both were employees of what was then the Office of Education at the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, which was soon to become the Department of Education. After many years of service as an equal employment opportunity specialist there, Bob decided to further his education at night and eventually succeeded in becoming a fellow law school graduate and member of the bar. Only in failing health over the past few years was Bob prevented from engaging in the public Scrabble activities that he so enjoyed. I will remember him as both a fabulous ambassador of Scrabble in the DC area and a great friend. A report on last week’s activity in Chevy Chase follows. At the World Scrabble Players tournament that concluded this week in Dallas, our own Bob Linn finished as the #1 U.S. player. Only players from Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia did better. We want to hear from Bob about how he did it, starting when we'd usually start our third round at 7:10 p.m. (pairings as usual at 5:30 and 6:20) I hope that many of you can come to applaud Bob's achievement and hear how it is to play with a vocabulary much expanded from the one we usually use. She and her husband, Bill Holland, who survives her, hosted the Chevy Chase club in the early 80s, and they are among the finest people I have ever known. For a short time in the early 80s, Evelyn and Dan Pratt hosted Sunday meetings of Dan's Club 50 in Evelyn and Bill's home, and during that same period, I accompanied Bill and Evelyn to Jan Beck's club in Columbia many times on Monday nights. Despite the fact that Evelyn and Bill -- but especially Evelyn -- could beat a person up pretty badly in a game of Scrabble, Bill and Evelyn were adored by everyone, everywhere. They were consistently rays of sunshine who were genuinely as thrilled by the Scrabble (and non-Scrabble) successes of their friends and acquaintances as they were by their own. For Evelyn and Bill, Scrabble was more than just a game that provided them literally tens of thousands of hours of mental stimulation and competition over the years. Scrabble was also a means to the end of establishing new friendships and deepening existing ones. Evelyn and Bill were greatly missed when they moved out of the DC area to be closer to members of their large, close-knit, loving families, most of whom I had the pleasure of meeting when Bill and Evelyn finally "tied the knot" in the mid-90s after years of "sinful" cohabitation. Just as those families no doubt celebrated Evelyn's gifts to their lives when Evelyn departed in January, we should all celebrate the contributions that Evelyn made to our lives, including the lasting contribution she has made to many people whom she never knew -- the creation of Club 171. This is not planned in the U.S. and will not supplant our regular game. Our own Charlie Williamson and Lily Gasperetti took 3rd place overall out of 95 teams at the 2010 National School Scrabble Championship this past weekend in Orlando. Last but not least, we should get into the habit of writing down blank designations and showing them to our opponents, to prevent confusion. A new tournament rule on this will be going into effect Feb. 2. I'll expand on this in a future message. Don't assume if you play GLASSINg, for example, that your opponent knows (from your mumbling it) that the blank is a G. It could be an E, as in GLASSINe.
